Bunk Beds

Bunk beds solve a common dilemma in family homes, by allowing two beds to fit into the floor space of one. Two stacked sleeping surfaces give a shared bedroom the breathing room it usually lacks, and suit growing families, holiday cottages and caravans, student and shared housing, and any room where guests need to sleep without permanent furniture taking up the floor.

The standard bunk bed format pairs a single over a single, but you'll find many variations. Triple bunks add a third bed, either as a third tier or a perpendicular bottom bunk. Single-over-double bunks pair a 4ft 6in double underneath with a single on top, which works well for an older child sharing with a younger sibling, or a teenager who wants the lower bed as a sofa. L-shape and corner bunks angle the two beds into an L for a different room dynamic. Bunks with a pull-out trundle offer give you the flexibility to bring out a third sleeping position from underneath when needed. Yet not all bunk beds are designed to combine multiple sleeping surfaces - modern designs have extended the concept to include built-in desks, storage drawers and pull-out trundles to claim back even more space. For very small rooms, a high sleeper or loft bed lifts a single up and frees the floor for a desk, wardrobe or play area (effectively a bunk without the bottom bunk). A sofa bunk converts the lower bed into daytime seating.

Most bunk beds are made in either wood or metal - the former tends to suit children's rooms, whereas the latter works better in studios and shared housing. At the more affordable end of the spectrum you'll find bunk beds made from painted MDF and powder-coated steel. Solid pine or oak frames are more expensive, but feel substantial and handle years of climbing better than thin tube frames. Whatever the material, check the upper bunk has a continuous guardrail on both sides, and a ladder or stairs suited to the user's age. Stairs are preferred for younger children as they are easier and safer to climb. And whilst on safety, consider the mattress depth and aim for no more than 15cm - this matters on the top bunk, as a thick mattress reduces the effective guardrail height. Whereas most bunk beds are designed with children in mind, you can find adult bunk beds that have a higher weight tolerance. Children's bunks are generally rated for 70 to 90kg per tier, compared to adult-rated frames that are typically built for 100 to 150kg.

At what age can a child sleep on the top bunk?

UK and EU safety guidance recommends children under six should not use the top bunk. Most manufacturers set the minimum at six, with stairs preferred over a ladder for younger children because they are easier and safer to use.

Are bunk beds safe for adults?

Yes, provided the frame is rated for adult weight. Look for frames with a per-tier weight limit of at least 100kg, a solid slatted or sprung base, and a sturdy staircase or ladder.

Can bunk beds be separated into two single beds?

Many wooden bunk beds are designed to split into two standalone singles, extending their useful life as children grow. Check the product specification before buying if this matters.

What mattress depth works on a top bunk?

Aim for no deeper than 15cm so the guardrail still sits at least 13cm above the mattress surface. Thicker mattresses reduce the safety margin.

How much space do I need for a bunk bed?

A standard single bunk is roughly 200cm long, 100cm wide and 150 to 170cm tall. Allow at least 60cm of head clearance above the top mattress, and clear walking space on the ladder or stairs side.
