Description

Design. This 1957 dining chair was cleverly designed to stack vertically. The original was widely used by meeting rooms and schools, before the dawn of the ubiquitous polypropylene chair. Now it forms an ideal chair for when you have extra visitors, whilst when not in use a stack of these chairs makes a dramatic display. Since 1920 Ercol has been making classic, timeless pieces of furniture. They are delighted to reissue a small selection of some of their favourite pieces. Made in small volumes these pieces offer a unique and distinctive product.

Our Stylist Says

I love these stacking dining chairs for their clean, minimal aesthetic and versatile appeal. The clear matt ash finish gives them a light, contemporary look that works particularly well in modern or Scandi-inspired interiors. They’re also practical as they can be easily stacked away when not in use, making them ideal for smaller spaces or multifunctional rooms. To style them, consider pairing with a warm-toned or neutral tabletop to highlight the natural wood, or adding colourful cushions for a pop of colour. They look equally at home in casual family kitchens or sleek dining rooms, adding functionality without sacrificing style.

About Barker and Stonehouse

Founded in 1946, Barker and Stonehouse offer a diverse range of stylish and timeless pieces. From contemporary to traditional designs, Barker and Stonehouse brings sophistication and comfort to every room.

A Remarkable Journey

Born from the vision of two young RAF men, Charles Barker and Alex Stonehouse, Barker and Stonehouse emerged as a beacon of hope, infusing post-war Britain with a hint of glamour. Starting from a single store in Stockton on Tees, their entrepreneurial spirit led to rapid expansion, opening multiple stores across the region.

Their fast growth was fueled not only by their flair for business but also by their dedication to innovation. The business transformed over the years, adapting to the changing landscapes of retail, all while preserving its charm and values. By 2021, they marked an impressive 75 years in the industry, a testament to their enduring commitment to quality and customer service.

Sustainability at the Forefront

From the very start, Barker and Stonehouse has held a deep commitment to the environment. This devotion was showcased through initiatives such as the Trees4Trees Project, a reforestation effort in Indonesia.

Ensuring that for every tree used in their products, more than two were replanted, nearly 1.5 million trees have been restored under this initiative.

Their Knaresborough store, one of the greenest retail stores in the UK, further underscores their dedication to sustainable practices. As a cherry on top, by 2021, the company achieved the status of "Carbon Neutral Plus", making them a trailblazer in the furniture industry.

Innovative Spaces and Expanding Horizons

Over the decades, Barker and Stonehouse didn't just expand in number, but in the quality and innovation of their spaces. From opening their iconic store in Battersea, London, which beautifully preserved the characteristics of an old candle factory, to their latest state-of-the-art Gateshead store in 2023, every location tells a story.

They have also ventured into digital realms, ensuring a vast online presence and offering a wide range of products to customers all over the UK. Their partnerships, like the one with Fenwick in 2021, illustrate their adaptability and constant quest to reach new audiences.
