Chest of Drawers

A chest of drawers is one of the most enduring and adaptable pieces of furniture you can bring into a home. Whether you need to organise clothing in the bedroom, store linens in a hallway, or tuck away essentials in a living space, it combines practicality with style in a way few items can. From tall and narrow options that make the most of vertical space to wide, low or large designs that double as statement pieces, there is a chest of drawers to suit every interior and need.

In the bedroom, a tallboy or six-drawer chest provides generous storage, while a slim three- or five-drawer design fits neatly beside a wardrobe or bed. For compact rooms, a narrow or skinny chest offers organisation without overwhelming the space. A kids' chest of drawers is equally practical, encouraging tidiness while keeping clothing and toys contained. Beyond the bedroom, chests of drawers are just as versatile. A low or wide design can serve as a console in a hallway, a dresser in a dining room, or a corner unit in a living room. In open-plan spaces, a long chest can subtly divide areas, while thin or short models make the most of awkward alcoves.

The choice of material and finish can completely transform the look and feel of a chest of drawers. Oak remains a timeless favourite - solid, sturdy and rich in texture, perfect for classic interiors. Pine is lighter in tone and weight, easy to move and ideal for a relaxed or coastal style. Walnut and mango wood add depth and character, their darker grain creating warmth in both modern and vintage schemes. A white gloss or cream finish brings brightness and calm, while black, grey or dark wood lends a contemporary edge. For something unique, consider a rattan, antique or hand-built piece with markings that tell a story. Many homeowners choose to upcycle vintage chests - a fresh coat of paint and new handles can give an old dresser a second life.

For those drawn to particular styles, there's no shortage of choice. Mid-century and retro designs continue to enjoy a revival, often featuring clean lines, tapered legs and warm wood tones. French dressers with curved drawers and ornate handles bring romance and elegance, while modern gloss-finish pieces add a sleek, minimalist feel.

When choosing a chest of drawers, consider assembly and access. Ready assembled models save time, but check dimensions carefully to ensure they can be manoeuvred into place. Flat-pack versions offer flexibility for tighter staircases or doorways. Prices vary depending on size, material and craftsmanship. Pine or painted wood provides affordable options, while handcrafted or antique pieces often justify their cost through longevity and character.

Styling the surface of your chest can transform it from simple storage into a design feature. Pair it with mirrors to add depth and light, or place a soft lamp or vase for an inviting touch. Candles, artwork, and photo frames bring personality to an otherwise functional surface. Keep proportions in mind: a tall mirror balances a low dresser, while smaller objects such as trinket trays or jewellery boxes complete the arrangement without clutter. Inside the drawers, good organisation makes a real difference. Drawer dividers help separate clothing, accessories or linens, and scented sachets keep everything fresh. Thoughtful allocation - knitwear in one drawer, seasonal items in another - ensures you make the most of available space.

What size chest of drawers do I need for my bedroom?

Measure both the available width and depth of your space. Tall or narrow units maximise storage in smaller rooms, while wide or low options create a stronger visual presence in larger bedrooms.

What's the best wood for a long-lasting chest of drawers?

Solid oak, pine or walnut tends to be more durable and easier to upcycle or repaint, though engineered options can be more affordable and lighter to move.

Can I use a chest of drawers outside the bedroom?

Absolutely. They make excellent storage for dining rooms, hallways or living areas. A low dresser can even act as a media unit or sideboard.

How many drawers do I need?

A 3 or 4 drawer chest works for minimal storage, while 6, 8 or more drawers suit larger wardrobes or shared bedrooms.

How can I style the top of my chest of drawers?

Start with something vertical, like a mirror or lamp, then add personal touches such as candles, artwork, or a small vase of artificial flowers to bring warmth and balance.
