Candle Holders

Candle holders are the vessels that turn a simple candle into a styled centrepiece. A taper in a cheap holder lists to one side before the wax has melted a centimetre; a tealight rattling in an oversized lantern looks like a mistake. The right vessel does the opposite: it makes the candle feel considered, and contributes its own presence to the shelf or table even when nothing is burning.

When choosing a candle holder, start with matching the holder to the candle type. Candlesticks hold tapers and dinner candles and set the formality of a table almost entirely on their own. Brass or silver candlesticks look traditional, whereas matte black or concrete read as contemporary. Tealight holders work best in clusters, where the combined light is more interesting than the individual flame. Pillar holders take wider freestanding candles and typically include a tray or plate to catch drips, which matters more than it sounds over a long evening. Hurricane lanterns enclose the flame in glass, which protects it from draughts and makes them the right choice for outdoors on a patio or garden table. Sconces and wall-mounted designs free up surface space entirely and work particularly well in hallways, stairwells and dining rooms where a table candle would feel awkward.

Material shapes what the holder contributes to the room. Metal designs tend to have a quiet authority that allows them to disappear into a room scheme and lets the candlelight do the work, although gold and brass in particular do the opposite - they draw the eye and look especially good on a mantelpiece where they pick up the warmth of the flame. Ceramic and rustic holders have a certain aesthetic, whilst wooden designs lend a softer look. Glass and crystal are the exception to the rule that material should recede: they refract the flame in a way solid materials cannot, and a glass hurricane lantern is worth choosing for that effect rather than around it.

Beyond candles, it is worth knowing that tall pillar holders make usable single-stem vases for dried or fresh flowers. Similarly, hurricane lanterns filled with fairy lights work well year-round, and votive holders double as small dishes for matches, trinkets or jewellery on a dressing table. A set of candles alongside their holders, arranged with a vase, a small sculpture and a clock, is one of the most reliable ways to build a mantelpiece that looks complete.

What size candle holder do I need?

Standard tapers measure around 1.9 to 2.2cm at the base, tealights roughly 4cm in diameter, and pillars range from 5 to 10cm. Holders are typically labelled with the candle size they accommodate.

Are glass candle holders safe?

Heat-resistant glass made specifically for candles is safe, although standard decorative glass can crack under sustained heat. Never burn a candle down to the very base of a glass holder, since heat concentrates at the bottom as the wick shortens.

Can candle holders be used outdoors?

Hurricane lanterns and sealed metal designs work well in gardens, on patios and at outdoor dining tables. The key is finding designs that protect the flame from wind, since lightweight holders with open tops tend to cause other problems, such as tipping over in a breeze

How do I clean wax out of a holder?

Freeze the holder for an hour to harden the wax, then pop it free with a blunt knife. For glass holders, filling with boiling water melts the residue and makes it easy to pour away once the water cools. A cotton pad with a little white spirit can remove any remaining film.

What is the difference between a candlestick and a sconce?

A candlestick is free-standing, designed to sit on a flat surface and hold a single candle vertically. A sconce is wall-mounted, often with a bracket or decorative arm, and adds candlelight at wall height without using surface space.

Can a candle holder be used for anything other than candles?

Yes. Tall pillar holders work well as single-stem vases for fresh or dried flowers, hurricane lanterns can hold strings of fairy lights or pine cones, and votive holders make small dishes for trinkets, jewellery or matches.
