Bookends

A shelf full of books tends to fall over without something to stop it, which is the basic premise of a bookend. What makes the better ones interesting is that they do this purely through weight and friction, with no fixings or adhesive, while also functioning as small decorative objects in their own right. It is a rare combination, and it is why a good pair of bookends can sit on a shelf that has nothing else on it and still look deliberate.

Weight determines what actually works. Marble, cast metal, brass, iron and stone are the most reliable materials for holding a row of hardbacks upright without sliding; marble bookends in particular have the density to hold a heavy collection without effort. Metal bookends in gold, chrome and aged brass lean towards art deco and industrial styles, while wooden bookends in oak, walnut and reclaimed timber bring a warmer, more forgiving quality that suits almost any room - which is why they remain the most popular choice. At the more contemporary end, concrete and resin appear in geometric and minimal forms, for shelves where the design of the bookend matters as much as the job it does.

For something with more character, animal-shaped designs (among them dogs, horses, cats, elephants and butterflies) are the most popular choice, partly because they carry a clear identity even at small scale. Themed designs drawn from books and film franchises make genuinely useful gifts for anyone with a strong collection of a single author or series. Vintage and antique brass designs in traditional forms suit older homes and library-style studies. Quirky, novelty and personalised options are available at the more playful end, and there is also a solid case for the simplest geometric shapes in black, white or natural finishes, where the books themselves are meant to do most of the visual work.

Bookends are also worth considering on a mantel, console table or sideboard: a small stack of cookbooks, a few vinyl records, a row of art books in a living room. They sit alongside sculptures, vases and candles in a styled shelf arrangement more naturally than almost any other small accessory, because their form makes sense in isolation as well as at either end of a row.

Flitch brings together bookends from more than 100 UK retailers in a single search, so you can compare materials, designs and prices without visiting a dozen different shops. Price history shows how each pair has moved over time, and price drop alerts mean you can act on a saving. Our expert stylists are available for advice on making a shelf or display work as a whole.

How heavy should bookends be?

Heavy enough that they do not slide when you pull a book out. Marble, stone and cast metal designs typically weigh 1.5 to 3kg each, which is enough for most collections. Lighter wooden or resin options work well for paperbacks but may not hold a row of large hardbacks reliably.

What is the difference between bookends and book stands?

Bookends sit at either end of a row to hold books upright. Book stands hold a single open book at a chosen page, with a lipped surface and adjustable angle, and they are more often used for cookbooks, sheet music or recipe books than for display.

Can bookends be used for things other than books?

Yes. Magazines, vinyl records, board games and folders all respond well to bookends. Sculptural or design-led pairs are often used purely as shelf pieces with no books between them at all.

Are bookends safe in children's rooms?

Yes, with the right choice of material. Heavier marble and cast iron are not suited to nurseries or young children's spaces; lighter resin, plastic and wooden designs with rounded edges are more appropriate.

How do I stop bookends from slipping?

Small rubber or felt pads on the underside increase friction against the shelf. Heavier materials with a flat, stable base tend to need less help staying put in the first place.
