Designer Eero Saarinen created the ground-breaking Womb Collection in 1946 at Florence Knoll's request for a seating series that was ‘like a basket full of pillows’. With this demand for superior comfort in mind, Saarinen designed the ergonomic, enveloping Womb Ottoman to accompany the armchair, upholstered here in Cato fabric in an assortment of hues. The Saarinen Womb Ottoman boasts a polished chrome-plated steel base, with an upholstered, moulded fibreglass shell. This ultimate designer ottoman doesn’t compromise on practicality or style, blending organic shape with a unique aesthetic. Like many of Saarinen’s furniture designs, the Womb Ottoman required production techniques and materials that were still in the infancy of their existence. Saarinen and Knoll innovatively found a boat builder in New Jersey who was experimenting with fibreglass and resin to help successfully develop manufacturing methods for the new design. Inspired by a hand-woven aesthetic, the Cato fabric that this Womb Ottoman is upholstered in was introduced in 1961 and is crafted from a wool-mix composition, with an exaggerated texture that creates the ultimate accent. The sculptural form of the Womb Ottoman continues to be one of the most iconic and recognised representations of mid-century Scandinavian style, making it an ideal investment piece for both traditional and modern interior schemes. The Womb Ottoman is available in in brown, fire red, green, grey, ivory, natural and sand hues, making it the perfect companion for your Womb Armchair, sure to endure though the years.
