Description
The diversity of Colombia’s landscapes inspired the young Dutch designer Mae Engelgeer for her Uilas rug. The Colombian province of Huila exists on the meeting of two forces of nature: the Rio Magdalena river and the Tatacoa desert. The designer brings the contrasting play of these natural phenomena to life in this rug with its asymmetrical contours, where natural hues are punctuated with subtle touches of vivid colour. The soft colours of the land and the desert meet the blue and green of the Rio Magdalena and its multifaceted floodplains. With its fique fibre, the colours and forms of the desert take shape. 100% natural, this vegetable fibre of Colombian origin comes from the tree of the same name. This sturdy fibre is used in the traditional manufacture of coffee sacks found throughout Colombia. Fique fibre is combined with virgin wool, soft and natural, which symbolises the luxuriance of the river valley. The twisted threads of the two natural materials form colourful stripes and produce an unusual spectrum of colours and brilliance. Uilas rugs are handcrafted in small traditional factories in the Colombian provinces of Santander and Boyacá. The incredible manual dexterity of knotters and weavers is evident in the asymmetrical shapes that give Uilas rugs a fun look.
