Maurizio Cattelan, an unavoidable figure in contemporary art, and photographer Pierpaolo Ferrari have created this capsule collection for Seletti. Unlike any other, it’s provocative, amusing, absurd and eccentric all at once. The various items from the collection (crockery, decorations, rugs and tables, etc.) are decorated with surrealist images taken from the Toilet Paper magazine, founded in 2010 by the two Italian artists. Perfectly manicured cut-off fingers, soap with a bite taken out of it, fish stuffed with precious gems, a canary with a cut-off wing, and more. Dreamlike Toilet Paper motifs tinged with black humour inspired by the worlds of fashion and advertising, combining commercial photography, twisted visual narratives and surreal imagery. A provocative style and kitsch aesthetics: the Toilet Paper collection questions our contemporary obsession for images by exploring our most unspeakable desires and urges. The various pieces that make up the Toilet Paper collection present startling scenes, combining disturbing normality with troubling ambiguity, stirring up feelings of horror combined with visual pleasure. A work of art in itself, the Toilet Paper collection questions, due to its accessible price and wide distribution, the nature and limits of the contemporary art market. This questioning has always been central in Maurizio Cattelan's work. Eccentric and spectacular, these rugs are decorated with hitherto-unseen resolution quality images, displaying incredible finesse. Using high-resolution printing technology, the decorations are so realistic that they appear to be sculpted into the rugs. This printing which uses an unlimited number of colours, gives a breath-taking illusion of depth.
