Description

Design. The Salvage collection tells an inspiring tale of ecological conservation and sustainability. The collection is constructed from century-old reclaimed pine from the UK, hailing from different origins including disused estates and mills, whisky distilleries, and other former structures. Each piece is therefore unique, and each tells a different story. Painstakingly restored by hand, intricate details of the wood are preserved to reflect centuries of weathering and use, while contemporary accents of metal add a touch of boldness and modernity.

Our Stylist Says

The large oak dining table offers a versatile and timeless piece that works well in both traditional and rustic interiors. I love its substantial, handcrafted feel, which brings a sense of solidity and heritage to the space. It’s particularly suited to open-plan kitchens or farmhouse-style dining rooms. To style it effectively, keep accessories minimal to highlight its natural timber grain, and consider pairing it with a mix of modern and vintage chairs for a curated, layered look. Practical tips include using a textured runner or placing statement centrepieces to add visual interest without cluttering its clean lines. This table’s robust construction and neutral tones make it a flexible anchor for various design schemes.

About Barker and Stonehouse

Founded in 1946, Barker and Stonehouse offer a diverse range of stylish and timeless pieces. From contemporary to traditional designs, Barker and Stonehouse brings sophistication and comfort to every room.

A Remarkable Journey

Born from the vision of two young RAF men, Charles Barker and Alex Stonehouse, Barker and Stonehouse emerged as a beacon of hope, infusing post-war Britain with a hint of glamour. Starting from a single store in Stockton on Tees, their entrepreneurial spirit led to rapid expansion, opening multiple stores across the region.

Their fast growth was fueled not only by their flair for business but also by their dedication to innovation. The business transformed over the years, adapting to the changing landscapes of retail, all while preserving its charm and values. By 2021, they marked an impressive 75 years in the industry, a testament to their enduring commitment to quality and customer service.

Sustainability at the Forefront

From the very start, Barker and Stonehouse has held a deep commitment to the environment. This devotion was showcased through initiatives such as the Trees4Trees Project, a reforestation effort in Indonesia.

Ensuring that for every tree used in their products, more than two were replanted, nearly 1.5 million trees have been restored under this initiative.

Their Knaresborough store, one of the greenest retail stores in the UK, further underscores their dedication to sustainable practices. As a cherry on top, by 2021, the company achieved the status of "Carbon Neutral Plus", making them a trailblazer in the furniture industry.

Innovative Spaces and Expanding Horizons

Over the decades, Barker and Stonehouse didn't just expand in number, but in the quality and innovation of their spaces. From opening their iconic store in Battersea, London, which beautifully preserved the characteristics of an old candle factory, to their latest state-of-the-art Gateshead store in 2023, every location tells a story.

They have also ventured into digital realms, ensuring a vast online presence and offering a wide range of products to customers all over the UK. Their partnerships, like the one with Fenwick in 2021, illustrate their adaptability and constant quest to reach new audiences.
