So French, so seventies: the cult Tam Tam stool, often imitated but never equalled! Discover the original version of the famous Tam Tam stool, designed in 1968 by Henri Massonnet (1922 - 2005) and reissued by Stamp Edition. The famous hourglass stool, on which Brigitte Bardot once famously perched, is very much a symbol of the 70s and has become a cult object, the hallmark of popular and practical design. This iconic stool, which is inexpensive, light, handy and easy to take apart, has sold more than 12 million copies and received recognition at New York's Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris. In the world of design, the late 1960s was the great age of plastic. Henry Massonnet had recently developed a new moulding process in his family company, Stamp, which manufactured combs. In 1968, the designer created a practical, portable stool for his fishermen clients: two hollow, conical parts that could be quickly assembled. Thanks to its affordable price, the appeal of the Tam Tam stool quickly spread beyond the river banks and became very popular. In 1969 it was unexpectedly thrust into the spotlight when Brigitte Bardot posed with several models in her sitting room for the magazine Ici Paris. Within the space of ten years, the Tam Tam sold more than 12 million copies and became a cult object. As a result, in 1970 it was admitted to the Museum of Modern Art's collection in New York and the designer was listed in the Guinness Book of Records. But the oil crisis of 1973 damaged the plastics industry, forcing Henry Massonnet to halt production of the Tam Tam in 1980. The original n° 169 moulds gathered dust for some twenty years. But, in the early 2000s, production restarted in the very same Stamp factory, in Nurieux, in the French region of Ain, also known as "Plastic Valley." Today, Tam Tam stools are still manufactured in this same factory in Ain, using the same n°169 mould that inspired the original design. The new generation of Tam Tam stools, which are 100% Made in France, can claim to be worthy successors to the original models. They're available in a range of ultra-trendy colours and styles: flashy, transparent, opaque, translucent and even a chrome finish. There's something for all tastes! Whether you have just the one stool or multiple, whether it's used for decorative or practical purposes, you'll always find somewhere for a Tam Tam in your home, be it in the bedroom, bathroom, kitchen or terrace (in dry weather).
