Bill Curry's Stemlite Floor Lamp for GUBI is nearing its 60th anniversary, celebrating six decades of the pioneering design. Curry was intent on creating a unified 'total look' lamp by replacing the traditional base-and-shade form with a self-contained unit. The result is the fluid Stemlite, modelled with a tulip-like stem fashioned from metal and crowned with a frosted glass globe, an emblem of America's West Coast in the 1960s.
I love this floor lamp for its sleek, modern design and versatile Pebble Grey finish, which makes it easy to incorporate into a variety of interiors. It works particularly well in minimalist or contemporary spaces, but can also add a subtle touch of sophistication to a mid-century or Scandinavian look. Practical styling tips include placing it next to a reading chair or sofa to create a cosy, functional corner, or using it to highlight a piece of artwork or decorative niche. Its understated form makes it a flexible choice, easily blending into both neutral and more boldly styled rooms, offering both functional lighting and a refined visual element.
