Description

Created from the influence of Timothy Oulton’s childhood when he collected military drums, and his father was a major in the British army. Fascinated by the detailing, construction and classic regimental colours of traditional military drums remained at the forefront when creating this military-inspired piece. This functional piece of furniture uses authentic materials such as vellum, hand-painted solid wood and leather to recognise its military history.

Our Stylist Says

I love this drum bookcase for its bold, sculptural presence and versatility. Its circular shape makes it a striking focal point, particularly in modern or eclectic interiors, while the gold finish lends a touch of luxury that can elevate both contemporary and more traditional spaces. It works well styled against neutral walls to let its shape and finish shine, or layered with colourful or textured accessories inside the compartments for added interest. Practical styling tips include using the compartments for displaying curated collections or decorative pieces, and pairing with other metallic accents for a cohesive look. Its size and design make it not only functional for storage but also an eye-catching feature piece in living rooms, bedrooms, or even open-plan areas.

About Barker and Stonehouse

Founded in 1946, Barker and Stonehouse offer a diverse range of stylish and timeless pieces. From contemporary to traditional designs, Barker and Stonehouse brings sophistication and comfort to every room.

A Remarkable Journey

Born from the vision of two young RAF men, Charles Barker and Alex Stonehouse, Barker and Stonehouse emerged as a beacon of hope, infusing post-war Britain with a hint of glamour. Starting from a single store in Stockton on Tees, their entrepreneurial spirit led to rapid expansion, opening multiple stores across the region.

Their fast growth was fueled not only by their flair for business but also by their dedication to innovation. The business transformed over the years, adapting to the changing landscapes of retail, all while preserving its charm and values. By 2021, they marked an impressive 75 years in the industry, a testament to their enduring commitment to quality and customer service.

Sustainability at the Forefront

From the very start, Barker and Stonehouse has held a deep commitment to the environment. This devotion was showcased through initiatives such as the Trees4Trees Project, a reforestation effort in Indonesia.

Ensuring that for every tree used in their products, more than two were replanted, nearly 1.5 million trees have been restored under this initiative.

Their Knaresborough store, one of the greenest retail stores in the UK, further underscores their dedication to sustainable practices. As a cherry on top, by 2021, the company achieved the status of "Carbon Neutral Plus", making them a trailblazer in the furniture industry.

Innovative Spaces and Expanding Horizons

Over the decades, Barker and Stonehouse didn't just expand in number, but in the quality and innovation of their spaces. From opening their iconic store in Battersea, London, which beautifully preserved the characteristics of an old candle factory, to their latest state-of-the-art Gateshead store in 2023, every location tells a story.

They have also ventured into digital realms, ensuring a vast online presence and offering a wide range of products to customers all over the UK. Their partnerships, like the one with Fenwick in 2021, illustrate their adaptability and constant quest to reach new audiences.
