Description
This handmade chair is a testament to the endurance of simple Shaker design. The Shakers valued honesty and utility in design, principles which influenced the 20th century minimalist movement. Their furniture was a balance between pieces that were sturdy enough to withstand daily use using limited amounts of locally sourced wood. Our Elder Dining Chair is crafted from solid elm wood – with a beautiful natural grain visible – it features a reinforced cane seat and an antique grey finish.

I often specify the Elder chair in schemes that favour natural materials and muted tones - its light-grey elm frame and simple spindle back suit both Scandinavian-inspired and modern farmhouse dining spaces. The gently curved back offers comfort without bulk, so it’s equally at home around a pared-back oak table or paired with a more robust, industrial-style base.
For a pulled-together look, layer on a neutral linen seat pad and add softly textured placemats in jute or raffia. You can introduce a subtle contrast by mixing in one or two chairs in a slightly darker finish, or keep them all the same for a clean, airy feel.
