I’m a big fan of this Mara bench for its clean lines and solid oak top - it brings just the right balance of warmth and simplicity. The painted base in soft white makes it versatile enough for coastal, Scandi or modern farmhouse schemes, while the woodgrain adds a tactile element that stops it feeling too clinical. For styling, use it as extra dining seating with seat pads or cushions in muted linens, or place it in an entrance hall with a woven basket underneath for shoes and a slim tray on top for keys. It also works well at the foot of a bed when paired with a cosy throw and a couple of low-profile decorative boxes for bedside storage.

Born from the vision of two young RAF men, Charles Barker and Alex Stonehouse, Barker and Stonehouse emerged as a beacon of hope, infusing post-war Britain with a hint of glamour. Starting from a single store in Stockton on Tees, their entrepreneurial spirit led to rapid expansion, opening multiple stores across the region.

Sustainability at the Forefront
From the very start, Barker and Stonehouse has held a deep commitment to the environment. This devotion was showcased through initiatives such as the Trees4Trees Project, a reforestation effort in Indonesia.
Ensuring that for every tree used in their products, more than two were replanted, nearly 1.5 million trees have been restored under this initiative.
Their Knaresborough store, one of the greenest retail stores in the UK, further underscores their dedication to sustainable practices. As a cherry on top, by 2021, the company achieved the status of "Carbon Neutral Plus", making them a trailblazer in the furniture industry.
