After a memorable career spanning over 60 years, designer and architect Achille Castiglioni (1918 - 2002) has gifted the world of design with an exceptional legacy. Having won seven Compasso d'Oro, he was one of the most significant industrial designers of the 20th Century. From 1952 onwards, he worked alongside his brother, Pier Giacomo, until the latter passed away in 1968. The Achille brothers and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni created lighting and furnishings that became iconic features in the history of design, contributing to endless successful collaborations with huge names: Flos, Zanotta and Alessi. Generally sober and stripped back, the Castiglioni brothers' creations innovate with their apparent simplicity, which often hides real work around the balance of forms and use of new materials. The designers had fun rejecting the traditional form of classic utilitarian items (such as the floor lamp), to offer inventive reinterpretations, always rational but sculptural, full of humour and tinged with poetry. Created in 1954, the Luminator floor lamp has become a design icon. It's composed of a simple spotlight placed at the end of a tube, mounted on a tripod which adds stability as much as it humanises the light. In 1955, for his Luminator lamp, Achille Castiglioni received the first of many Compasso d'Oro awards - the most prestigious accolade in Italian design. The bulb, sat atop the lamp's cylindrical body, projects a halo of light around the entire room. Mastering the art of being simple without being simplistic, this post-war floor lamp is a stunning demonstration of the Castiglioni brothers' quest to contribute to avant-garde modernism, flirting with minimalism. The Castiglioni brothers' aim was to find a form of minimal design that would allow the object to fulfil its required functions. The aim was to reach a point where, in their own words, you could not do any less. With Luminator, they tried to bring the object back to its simplest expression. The design was streamlined and clarified, focusing on ergonomics and functionality. Timeless and modern, Luminator stands out with the balance and attention to detail with which the materials were used, the exemplary simplicity of the composition, the adaptation of the light source to the supporting structure, and the dimensional relations between the parts. A product rooted in a discreet tone of anthracite grey, the iconic and minimal design has been updated with a new, extraordinary palette of pop colours.
