Fans of vintage Scandinavian design will be delighted: Hay has reissued the furniture in the FDB collection, iconic pieces developed by leading Danish designers between the 1940s and 1960s. The J41 (without armrests) and J42 (with armrests) chairs, both Danish classics, were designed in 1933 by Børge Mogensen when he was design director of the FDB. This Danish consumers' cooperative was established in 1933 with the aim of offering the public designer furniture at an affordable price. FDV revolutionised industrial design and was responsible for many iconic Danish designs. Børge Mogensen retained the main features of the traditional Windsor chair: including the use of wood and the back created from fine spindles. This gives the great classic cleaner, more modern lines of Scandinavian inspiration. The assembly of spindles provides a balanced and wonderfully graceful openwork structure. You’ll love the very graphic effect created by this decorative little chair. Børge Mogensen was incredibly prolific and was responsible for many Danish design classics from the 1950s and 1960s. His simple, high quality furniture with its timeless appeal won him numerous international prizes. Some of his designs are exhibited in major museums around the world.
I love this chair for its timeless simplicity and craftsmanship, making it a versatile addition to various dining spaces. Its natural beechwood finish brings warmth that complements both modern and traditional interiors, especially Scandi-inspired or rustic schemes. Practical styling tips include pairing it with a neutral-toned dining table to highlight its clean lines, or mixing it with other wooden chairs for an eclectic look. It also works well with upholstered cushions for added comfort and a touch of colour. Overall, it's a durable, stylish choice for anyone looking to combine functional design with classic appeal.
