Description

A selection of truly unique and totally individual traditional hand-knotted rugs, this range from Gooch Oriental showcases rugs created by different artisans across town and village locations across the world, including traditional Persian creations. Each piece is carefully selected by the Gooch Oriental team to ensure it's authenticity, quality and finish. Each one is knotted by hand, an intricate process using traditional hand knotting techniques. As such, no two pieces are the same, meaning you can add an authentic and unique piece of crafted design into your home, whilst supporting this heritage industry. Kazak rugs were originally made in the Caucus during the 1800s. Now the Afghan Hazara people in Afghanistan are continuing to weave these hand knotted works of art. The new generation of weavers in Afghanistan have embraced the colours, patterns and workmanship of the traditional Kazak rug weavers from the Caucus. The original Kazak rugs were a type of Armenian rug woven in the region between Tiflis and Erevan that lie south of Caucasus. The original weavers were mostly Turkic nomads who arrived in the region at the time of the great westward migration of Turks in the 11th century and later settled here. Kazak rugs are not associated with any particular tribe. Instead, they are associated with the geographical areas in which they were woven. The construction techniques that were used ensured that the designs and colours were capable of withstanding more than half a century of wear and exposure. Kazak rug weavers are faithful in using traditional bold colour and design mainly with geometrical motifs including a mixture of diamond and circle shapes as well as representations of animals, people and nature. In 1sqm of a Kazak rug there would be around 90,000 -100,000 knots giving a low-density pile. The benefits of a wool rug Warm and durable, wool feels beautifully soft underfoot and is long-lasting Naturally flame-retardant and odour resistant Water repellent so easier to clean Naturally biodegradable, wool is part of the circular economy and contains no micro plastics About your new rug We recommend John Lewis & Partners Rug Hold Underlay. It prevents your rug from moving underfoot and protects against colour transfer to the floor As this rug is made using natural fibres, shedding is to be expected. This will reduce over time, and should not have an impact on the lifespan or performance of your rug. When you first get your rug, please use the brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner whilst the shedding dies down. After that, when vacuuming your rug, use suction only. Rotating brushes may damage the fibres. When vacuuming your rug, use suction only. Rotating brushes may damage the fibres Blot any spills with a clean, dry cloth. Do not rub or use harsh detergents. Textile backed Attend to spillages immediately and blot with a clean, dry cloth to prevent staining. Dilute a small amount of appropriate carpet shampoo in water. Dampen a colourfast cloth in the diluted shampoo solution and dab the rug, lightly agitating, moving in the direction of the pile. Treat the whole rug and not just the affected area. To restore the appearance of the affected area, use a soft bristled brush to gently comb in the direction of the pile. Allow the rug to thoroughly dry.

Our Stylist Says

I love this rug because its vibrant blue hue and intricate design add a touch of character to both traditional and contemporary interiors. Its sizeable dimensions make it a versatile anchor piece-perfect for living rooms or larger dining areas. To style it effectively, pair it with neutral furniture to let the pattern stand out, or complement it with accessories in coordinating colours like reds, golds, or creams. Practical tips include layering with a simple underlay to prevent slipping and ensuring the rug is positioned so the pattern remains prominent under key furniture pieces. This piece works well in spaces where you want to introduce colour and visual interest without overwhelming the overall decor.

About John Lewis

Founded in 1864, John Lewis is a trusted and beloved brand where you can find a diverse range of furniture for every style and budget, alongside finding the perfect item that reflects your personal taste.

A Legacy of Innovation and Inclusion

John Lewis started as a small shop on London's Oxford Street in 1864. Today, it's part of a bigger family called the John Lewis Partnership, which also includes Waitrose stores.

What makes them special is that they're owned by their employees, known as 'Partners'. The idea, from the beginning, was to give everyone a say in how the business was run. With over 74,000 Partners (employees) at the heart of its operations, the essence of John Lewis's vision, from over a century ago, still echoes today being the largest employee-owned venture.

Adapting to Changing Times

Like many stores, John Lewis has had to change with the times. They've closed some shops but have grown their online business a lot, especially when more people started shopping online during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Their history is filled with key moments, like buying Peter Jones in 1905, adding Waitrose in 1937, and starting their website in 2001. They've always tried to adapt and stay relevant.

Commitment to a Greater Purpose

John Lewis believes in doing good and making the world a better place. This is seen in the way they treat their employees and customers. For example, in 2021, they were the first big UK store to give parents six months paid leave when they have a baby and two weeks paid leave if they lose a pregnancy. They've been around for over a century and always aim to do the right thing by everyone.
