Charles and Ray Eames are two of the most important designers of the 20th century. It was in 1949 that Charles and Ray Eames developed their innovative desk and shelving system, called the Eames Desk Unit (EDU) and Eames Storage Unit (ESU) respectively, inspired by the same aesthetic as the iconic Eames House. Nestled on the heights of Los Angeles, the home of the famous couple of designers mixes natural wood and black metal. It is recognisable by its facades brought to life by panels of primary colours, which give it the air of a Mondrian painting. Much like the Eames House, built at the same time, the ESU shelving units and EDU desk were designed according to the principles of industrial series production. The ESU multifunctional shelving system combines natural birch veneer shelving with black lacquered steel structures. Colourful aluminium panels punctuate the spaces, adding rhythm and a playful dimension. The ESU bookcase consists of four levels, offering plenty of storage space. It has three drawers, two levels closed by sliding doors and three open boxes. The four levels of shelves correspond to the standard height of files. ? In collaboration with the Eames Office, Dutch designer Hella Jongerius gave the ESU shelves a new lease of life by revising their chromatic range. A new assortment of colours has been carefully defined to bring a touch of freshness and modernity to the ESU shelves, while retaining the vintage spirit of 1949 and 1950. ? The ESU Shelf system is available in several heights, from the low sideboard to the tall bookcase.
