An admirer of Alexander Calder, in 1951 Schottlander created the Mantis series of lamps. Movement is intrinsic to all of Schottlander’s work: an artist, an engineer and in no small measure a handyman, he devised a clever system of counterweights combined with a series of strong and flexible metal bars. The shade is unique of its kind. Like an acrobat suspended in mid-air, it's made from aluminium using spinning and chasing techniques that are a part of the metalworker’s inventory of skills, but to which he has brought his sculptor’s eye to create a helical movement.
The black Mantis floor lamp is a stylish yet functional piece that works particularly well in modern and minimalist interiors. Its sleek silhouette and matte finish give it a contemporary edge, making it a versatile addition to living rooms, bedrooms, or even workspaces. I love how its slim profile allows it to slot into tight corners or beside seating without overwhelming the space. To style it effectively, consider pairing it with neutral-coloured furnishings to make the lamp stand out or complementing it with industrial accents for an edgy, urban look. Practical tips include positioning it where adjustable lighting is needed, such as next to a reading chair or beside a bed, to maximise its utility and visual impact.
