With Skynest, designer Marcel Wabders weaves a link between tradition and innovation… Skynest poetically blends the tradition of craft weaving with innovative lighting techniques to create a unique design object. Skynest looks at first glance like a lampshade with a central core. The light, however, is not emitted by a bulb located in the centre of the lampshade. A closer look reveals that the light emanates from recycled fabric tubes that form the structure of the lampshade. LED strips are inserted in some of the fabric tubes. Each light element is powered by special micro-connectors located at the top of the dome. The lampshade is thus made up of 24 luminous fabric tubes intersected with non-luminous fabric tubes. The result is amazing: the lampshade is studded with a network of filaments of light. The 24 luminous fabric tubes are two-tone: the top is in coloured mesh, while the underside is totally white to ensure optimal light output. These delicate textile tubes, embedded with LED lights, reminiscent of yarn, are woven throughout the design of the lamp, creating a unique element of surprise, which defies the archetype of bulb lighting. With Skynest, Marcel Wanders shakes up the archetype of bulb lighting and offers a new perspective by making the lampshade the source of light. Skynest marks Marcel Wanders' return to the theme of the suspended dome, already explored in his bestseller Skygarden for Flos. The name both evokes this previous centrepiece and suggests a nest of light suspended in the sky. The clever modular design also ensures durability, as Skynest can be completely disassembled for repair and recycling.
