Avant-garde contemporary design... Founder of the 13. Desserts label, young French designer Clément Rougelot has designed a marbled table that reinterprets the heritage of the 80s. The wooden top is covered with Alpi wood veneer designed by Ettore Sottsass in 1980 at the start of the Memphis movement. The iconic marbled pattern of the ALPI Sottsass wooden collection is characterised by accentuating the design of the veins which enhance the colours of the wood, offering these unusual combinations and unconventional language typical of Sottsass. Designer Clément Rougelot: ''I have always been inspired by the Memphis group with designers De Lucchi and Kuramata. For this “Canebas” table, I wanted to use a wood veneer whose patterns were designed by Ettore Sottsass in the 80s which an Italian company is now marketing again. I was also struck by Andrea Branzi's Animali Domestici collection and the way he combined industrial elements with other, very raw ones, to produce archetypal objects.'' The base is made up of large black steel tubes. The rigour of the base contrasts with the patterns of the veneer. The connection between the base and top is provided by aluminium pins which raise up the top. As such, the top seems to levitate above the tubular structure. Each Canebas table is manufactured and assembled by hand by artisans in France. French designer 13. Desserts approaches design from a radical perspective, seeking balance between artistic freedom, mass production and "collectability". Giving pride of place to experimentation, this emerging design label explores new production avenues combining industrial processes and artisanal know-how. Uninhibited by the codes and trends that govern the market, the young guard of French design expresses itself freely, offering a selection of radically unique pieces.
