Description

Innovatively designed by Marcel Gascoin in 1947 to suit the compact post-war French home, the C-Chair from GUBI is an elegant reimagining of Gascoin's enduring mid-century design. Characterised by its high-quality wooden workmanship and distinctive leg profile, the minimalist chair is crafted from robust oiled oak. This new version is finished with an exquisitely crafted paper cord seat and backrest, to texturally complement the wooden frame. One of the post-war era's leading designers, Marcel Gascoin's designs became a staple in French homes during the 1950s. His fascination with utilitarian characteristics and flexible functionality began in childhood, where he grew up around boats, admiring their efficient use of space. Gascoin's iconic C-Chair design rejected the tradition of oversized and ornate Louis XV or Regency chairs that were popular at the time, instead prioritising simple functionality, executed with meticulous attention to detail.

Our Stylist Says

I love this chair because of its blend of natural materials and minimalist design, making it a versatile piece for various dining spaces. The paper cord detail adds texture and visual interest, while the oak frame keeps it grounded and durable. It works particularly well in contemporary, Scandi-inspired, or rustic interiors, where its organic feel complements other natural elements. For styling tips, pair it with a reclaimed wood table or a simple, neutral table setting to keep the look cohesive. Conversely, it can provide a softer contrast against darker or industrial interiors, adding an unexpected warmth. Its compact size makes it ideal for smaller dining rooms or as extra seating in a breakfast nook.
