Created by British designer Tom Dixon, the Beat lighting collection has become a design classic. In 2012, Tom Dixon got involved in an initiative launched in the city of Jaipur in India to create alternative solutions to the rapid disappearance of artisans and their know-how. The Beat lights were born from this project: they’re handcrafted by renowned artisans in Moradabad, northern India. The Beat collection uses ancestral traditional techniques of brasswork, making it possible to keep part of this craftsmanship alive in a new context. The interior of each piece bears the marks of its manufacture and spun, braised and hand-beaten brass. Each piece is unique and represents the testament of a very time-consuming process dating back several centuries: it can take up to 4 days to create a single light. Each piece bears the stamp of the craftsman who created it. The Beat pendant series comes in different distinct shapes inspired by the sculptural simplicity of traditional Indian water containers. The interior of the lampshades has a textured, beaten brass finish that optimally refracts and reflects the light for efficient, warm lighting. Beat pendants emit quality light. The matt black exterior contrasts nicely with the gold interior. More energy-efficient, Beat pendants now come with an integrated LED light source. This LED module offers longer life expectancy, better energy efficiency and improved performance, including the ability to dim and control the light. This integrated LED module is fully serviceable and replacement components are available if needed.
I love the clean, minimalist look of this pendant, which works beautifully in modern and industrial interiors. Its hand-crafted black finish adds a touch of craftsmanship and sophistication, making it versatile for both residential and commercial spaces. It pairs well above kitchen islands, dining tables, or in open-plan living areas where a statement yet understated lighting piece is needed. For styling tips, consider layering with other black finishes or contrasting textures such as wood or metallic accents to create visual interest. Its practical size and straightforward design make it a reliable choice that provides both function and style without overpowering the space.
