Price History

Description

These luminous sculptures shaped like peeled bananas, evocative of the American Pop Art movement, were created by the Belgian artists at Studio Job. The Banana lamps were created initially in limited editions for the Art Light exhibition at the Carpenters Workshop Gallery in Paris. Seletti then decided to mass-produce these wacky, offbeat lamps, replacing the bronze with golden resin. The long, slender diffuser is made of glass. The banana is the most popular fruit in the world. The Banana lamp is a reference to the other popular Pop Art icons, for example the Campbell’s Soup Cans, Dollars Signs and Coca-Cola Bottles. These ultra-realistic lamps shaped like peeled bananas are inspired by the Andy Warhol movement: they are a positive representation of something we see everyday, something everyone can recognise. Objects are portrayed in their simplest and most recognisable form. Once transposed onto a canvas or another medium, even the most common trappings of our modern civilisation, like a simple banana, can become works of art. Studio Job has two free electrons, Job Smeets and Nynke Tynagel, known for the rebellious and non-conformist way they create a particular universe. The Flemish couple work in both the industrial world and the world of art and design on projects combining craftmanship and a highly expressive avant-garde language rich in symbols, often for limited editions.

Our Stylist Says

I love this banana shape lamp for its playful yet sophisticated aesthetic, making it a fun statement piece in both contemporary and eclectic interiors. Its resin and glass construction with the gold detailing lends a touch of luxe, so it works beautifully in modern living rooms, quirky home offices, or even chic bedrooms. To style it effectively, I suggest using it as a feature lamp on a side table or shelf, pairing it with more understated pieces to let its unique form stand out. Adding complementary metallic accents or soft coloured textiles can help create a cohesive look that balances playful creativity with refined elegance.
