Designer Eero Saarinen created the ground-breaking Womb Sofa in 1946 at Florence Knoll's request for a design that was 'like a basket full of pillows'. With this demand for superior comfort in mind, Saarinen designed the ergonomic, enveloping Womb Sofa, upholstered here in Knoll's classic tight weave 'Hopsack' fabric. The Womb Sofa boasts a polished chrome-plated steel base, with an upholstered, moulded fibreglass shell. This ultimate designer sofa doesn't compromise on practicality or style, blending organic shape with a unique aesthetic. Like many of Saarinen's furniture designs, the Womb Sofa required production techniques and materials that were still in the infancy of their existence. Saarinen and Knoll innovatively found a boat builder in New Jersey who was experimenting with fibreglass and resin to help successfully develop manufacturing methods for the new design. The enveloping, sculptural form of the Womb Sofa continues to be one of the most iconic and recognised representations of mid-century Scandinavian style, making it an ideal investment piece for both traditional and modern interior schemes.
