Perhaps William Morris’s most recognisable design, Strawberry Thief was inspired by the thrushes that crept under Morris’s strawberry nets in his garden at Kelmscott Manor, Oxfordshire. The original pattern took several days to print using hand-carved woodblocks to build up the different colours, and ‘Strawberry Thief’ was consequently one of Morris’s firm’s most expensive cottons. Whilst waiting to see the first piece printed, Morris endured sleepless nights in his lodgings at Merton Abbey. Designed in 1883, Strawberry Thief remains one of William Morris’s most popular and iconic designs. I love this cushion for its classic William Morris print with the charming strawberry thief motif, which adds a touch of Victorian elegance to any space. It works particularly well in traditional or vintage-inspired interiors, but can also bring a surprising boost of colour and pattern to more modern schemes when styled thoughtfully. Pair it with neutral sofas or armchairs to let the design stand out, or mix with other botanical prints for a layered look. Practical styling tips include using it as an accent piece on a plain sofa, or integrating it into a cozy nook with complementary textiles like linen or velvet. Its green hue makes it versatile for both natural, earthy environments and more refined, layered décors.
