Expressing the maximum through the minimum via a dosage of light, space and material''. The prestigious architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte (creator of the Richelieu wing of the Grand Louvre and the layout of the wall for peace on the Champs de Mars in Paris) designs interiors as natural spaces where each element must agree logically and aesthetically with the others. Designed in 1983 by Jean-Michel Wilmotte for the French Embassy in Washington DC, the Washington lamp has since become a design icon. The Washington lamp features a sculptural, sophisticated construction that explores the notion of balance. Very graphic, it presents a superposition of two volumes. Executing a balancing act, the large spherical reflector fixed to the cylindrical base by a spherical joint gives the feeling of precarious balance which is only apparent. Inside the base is concealed a counterweight which ensures perfect stability. The 360° rotating diffuser around the base means the light can be directed. The Washington lamp’s silhouette is in keeping with the spirit of the 80s, while maintaining a classic timeless aesthetic. It adapts with versatility to any context, from the living room to the office, diffusing a bright, targeted light. The Washington set lamp, available in matt black and new limited edition brushed gold or palladium finishes.
I love this table lamp for its sleek, minimalist profile and modernist flair, making it a versatile piece that can enhance a wide range of interiors. Its black metal finish adds a sophisticated industrial touch, perfect for contemporary, modern, or even subtle mid-century styles. The design’s streamlined form makes it ideal for bedside tables, desks, or reading nooks where both aesthetics and functionality are key. Practical styling tips include pairing it with matte or textured surfaces to emphasise its refined materials, and placing it where its clean lines can be appreciated without clutter around it. Its timeless appeal makes it a reliable choice for adding a touch of architectural elegance to both residential and commercial spaces.
