Description

Over the years and in ongoing consultation with the Eames family, Vitra has introduced more sustainable materials for the seat shells of Eames plastic chairs. As of 2024, they are made from recycled plastic. The high-quality recycled material stems from household recycling, particularly used packaging, obtained through the "Yellow Bag" (Gelber Sack) collection programme in Germany. Utilising this raw material instead of petroleum-based primary plastics generates fewer climate-damaging emissions, with a significant reduction in primary energy consumption. Owing to the composition of the recycled material, the different colours are interspersed with tiny specks of pigment. Each seat shell is 100% recyclable at the end of its product life. Want to see it first? You may want to see and get a feel for the furniture in one of our shops before ordering. We'll be able to tell you where the range you'd like to view is on display.

Our Stylist Says

I’m a fan of the Eames DSR in its recycled-plastic version because it combines the classic mid-century form with a more sustainable shell and sleek chrome base. Its clean lines and neutral tones work equally well in minimalist Scandi schemes, contemporary loft spaces or pared-back home offices. For styling, try grouping a mix of DSR chairs around a solid-wood table to balance warmth and metal, or use a single chair as a desk seat paired with a slimline writing-table. A simple seat pad or small throw will add a touch of comfort and colour without hiding its iconic profile.

About John Lewis

Founded in 1864, John Lewis is a trusted and beloved brand where you can find a diverse range of furniture for every style and budget, alongside finding the perfect item that reflects your personal taste.

A Legacy of Innovation and Inclusion

John Lewis started as a small shop on London's Oxford Street in 1864. Today, it's part of a bigger family called the John Lewis Partnership, which also includes Waitrose stores.

What makes them special is that they're owned by their employees, known as 'Partners'. The idea, from the beginning, was to give everyone a say in how the business was run. With over 74,000 Partners (employees) at the heart of its operations, the essence of John Lewis's vision, from over a century ago, still echoes today being the largest employee-owned venture.

Adapting to Changing Times

Like many stores, John Lewis has had to change with the times. They've closed some shops but have grown their online business a lot, especially when more people started shopping online during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Their history is filled with key moments, like buying Peter Jones in 1905, adding Waitrose in 1937, and starting their website in 2001. They've always tried to adapt and stay relevant.

Commitment to a Greater Purpose

John Lewis believes in doing good and making the world a better place. This is seen in the way they treat their employees and customers. For example, in 2021, they were the first big UK store to give parents six months paid leave when they have a baby and two weeks paid leave if they lose a pregnancy. They've been around for over a century and always aim to do the right thing by everyone.
