A dreamlike skyscraper that mixes Art Deco and Memphis influences. An incredible play of colours and transparency for this sculptural light inspired by the urban architecture of large modern cities. With its essential geometric lines, its colours with their endless shades, Up. Town has an assured presence and a strong visual impact. Ferruccio Laviani, the ambassador of choice for Italian design, finds in glass, whether transparent or coloured, a perfect working base for imagination and creativity. Transparency is the common thread that guided the development of this project. The Up. Town lamp consists of three nested volumes in coloured glass. The superimposition of transparent primary colours (yellow, red and blue) gives life to new shades of vibrant colours. The colours vary depending on the light and the viewing angle, creating a play of interactions with the observer. From pink to green, orange to yellow, ethereal, iridescent colours follow one another, growing lighter or darker. A stunning effect! A sculptural object when turned off, the Up. Town lamp becomes striking once lit. The glass panels then fill with colour and the light projected upwards creates shadows on the ceiling. Cutting the glass plates at 45° makes the connections between the glass panels perfectly invisible. This precise and demanding glasswork produces a perfectly refined and ethereal silhouette. Ferruccio Laviani explains about Up. Town: ’The geometric lines so typical of Art Deco and Memphis, glass and its possible colour combinations, furniture in glass plate from the 60s… The list of sources of inspiration behind Up. Town could go on and on. The common point is the desire to return to the glass material: I wanted to express its unique ability to communicate transparency and colour, the intrinsic richness of this material. ’’ Ferruccio Laviani is part of this generation of Italian designers who broke through in the 1990s with the Memphis group. A perfect example of Italian design, it marks an evolution between the design of yesterday and that of the latest generation with all the required expression and exuberance.
I love this UpTown floor lamp for its bold, contemporary design and striking use of colour. Its tall, slender silhouette makes it a versatile statement piece that can add visual interest to a variety of interiors, from modern minimalism to eclectic spaces. The glass construction brings a touch of sophistication, while the multicoloured finish offers a playful edge. Practical styling tips include pairing it with understated furniture to let the lamp stand out, or using it as a focal point in a neutral living room. It works particularly well in high-ceilinged spaces or alongside other colourful accessories to create a lively, cohesive look.
