Real pioneers of mid-20th century Danish design, Peter Hvidt (1916-1986) and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen (1907-1993) had an avant-garde approach to industrialised production. Now their work is exhibited in MoMA, at the National Gallery of Melbourne and the Design Museum of Copenhagen. The duo of designers created the Tripod floor lamp in 1953. Never released until today, it is the first time that it has been produced to the great delight of collectors and fans of vintage design. This light illustrates the minimalism which all Hvidt & Mølgaard's creations are imbued with. The Tripod floor lamp is characterised by its wonderful architectural and light base, sporting geometric and balanced lines. Tripod establishes a delicate balance between the austere simplicity of its design and the softness of its base's curved lines. The coloured metal is given a twist by a few golden brass details which provide a sophisticated dimension to the piece. The lampshade is fixed and cannot be adjusted.
The Tripod HM8 is a sleek and modern floor lamp that works beautifully in both contemporary and minimalist interiors. I love its understated architectural look and clean black finish, which makes it versatile enough to slot into living rooms, study nooks, or bedrooms. It’s ideal for adding focused task lighting or creating subtle ambient light. When styling, consider pairing it with mid-century furniture or monochrome schemes to highlight its graphic silhouette. For practical tips, position it near a reading chair or sofa, and keep the cord discreet or use a floor outlet to maintain a tidy aesthetic. It’s a functional statement piece that combines form and function effortlessly.
