I’m a fan of this tall bookcase for its clean lines and mix of dark wood-effect shelves with a slim metal frame. It suits urban lofts, contemporary or Scandi schemes and works well in a living room, home office or hallway without overwhelming the space. Styling tip: vary the height of your books by stacking some horizontally, leave a little breathing space, and introduce texture with a small plant or ceramic object. On the bottom shelf, tuck in a couple of woven baskets for hidden storage, and stick to two or three key colours to keep the overall look cohesive.

In 1980, Chris Dawson set up a simple open-air market stall in Plymouth.
