Avant-garde contemporary design... Young French artist Thomas Defour had fun blurring the lines by creating a chair with a singular look, a collision of styles and materials. The Topless chair borrows from the fundamental playfulness and freedom of 80s design. The seat and front legs in coloured wood form a single unit with straight, strict, rigorous lines. The backrest and back legs are made of a thin curved steel tube – a recurring element of industrial design. This metal tube traces a curved, simple line in the air: anything visually superfluous is removed to leave only the aesthetic essence. The contrast is striking: while the wooden seat stands out visually, anchored to the ground and occupying space with its solid shapes, the ethereal backrest seems to disappear. From the meeting between these two elements with their different aesthetics, a hybrid silhouette is born, both familiar and strange. Combining industrial processes and artisanal know-how, the Topless chair is entirely made in France. Thomas Defour: “This era is very inspiring for our generation. It’s a period during which manufacturers followed the radical ideas of young designers. This resulted in more desirable objects, not just functional ones. It’s this way of producing unusual but rational forms that drives me. '' Halfway between sculpture and craftsmanship, Thomas Defour's technique has developed in a fusion of two methods, visual and applied, based around solar influences. French designer 13. Desserts approaches design from a radical perspective, seeking balance between artistic freedom, mass production and "collectability". Giving pride of place to experimentation, this emerging design label explores new production avenues combining industrial processes and artisanal know-how. Uninhibited by the codes and trends that govern the market, the young guard of French design expresses itself freely, offering a selection of radically unique pieces.
