Description

Made in the UK The Urchin Pendant Light is inspired by the empty shells of the Sea Urchin 'Echinus esculentus', a creature who inhabits the Cornish coast line. Designed to completely conceal the bulb, the spherical form of this wooden pendant light is made up from steam-bent strips of sustainably sourced wood and held by laser cut birch plates. The formation of the strips carefully conceals the light bulb whilst creating a beautiful lighting effect. Growing up surrounded by the natural beauty of Exmoor, England, Tom Raffield was inspired at an early age by the unspoiled landscapes of his environment. Whilst studying at art school he developed an innovative steaming method which allowed him to manipulate a variety of wood types and bring his stunning designs to life. These contemporary pieces are heavily influenced by forms found in nature, and are constructed using sustainable materials and ecologically sound practices. Handmade in Cornwall, England, Tom Raffield’s exquisite collection of lighting and furniture offers a remedy to the current throw-away culture, and re-introduces the concept of the cherished collectable.

Our Stylist Says

I love the Tom Raffield Urchin pendant because of its sculptural, natural form that brings a tactile and architectural element to a space. Its organic, spiky silhouette works beautifully in both contemporary and more eclectic interiors, adding visual interest without overpowering the room. It’s particularly effective in open-plan living areas or above dining tables where it can be a focal point. Practical styling tips include pairing it with minimalist decor to let its distinctive shape shine or using warm or ambient lighting to highlight its sculptural details. Keep other fixtures simple to let its natural shape stand out, and consider incorporating natural materials or textures around it to enhance its organic appeal.

About John Lewis

Founded in 1864, John Lewis is a trusted and beloved brand where you can find a diverse range of furniture for every style and budget, alongside finding the perfect item that reflects your personal taste.

A Legacy of Innovation and Inclusion

John Lewis started as a small shop on London's Oxford Street in 1864. Today, it's part of a bigger family called the John Lewis Partnership, which also includes Waitrose stores.

What makes them special is that they're owned by their employees, known as 'Partners'. The idea, from the beginning, was to give everyone a say in how the business was run. With over 74,000 Partners (employees) at the heart of its operations, the essence of John Lewis's vision, from over a century ago, still echoes today being the largest employee-owned venture.

Adapting to Changing Times

Like many stores, John Lewis has had to change with the times. They've closed some shops but have grown their online business a lot, especially when more people started shopping online during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Their history is filled with key moments, like buying Peter Jones in 1905, adding Waitrose in 1937, and starting their website in 2001. They've always tried to adapt and stay relevant.

Commitment to a Greater Purpose

John Lewis believes in doing good and making the world a better place. This is seen in the way they treat their employees and customers. For example, in 2021, they were the first big UK store to give parents six months paid leave when they have a baby and two weeks paid leave if they lose a pregnancy. They've been around for over a century and always aim to do the right thing by everyone.
