Price History

Description

A smaller version of Tom Raffield's striking Butterfly pendant, The Skipper features a minimalist design, appealing to those who are looking for an understated look. The shade incorporates the brand's signature steam bent design in stunning oak; ash; or walnut and is finished with a non-toxic varnish. Its petal-like shapes take form to allow light to intercept and cast shadows across your room. The quality and aesthetic of the wood remains at the helm in accordance with Scandinvian design principles. Fittings are included and feature an adjustable pendant cord. Growing up surrounded by the natural beauty of Exmoor, England, Tom Raffield was inspired at an early age by the unspoiled landscapes of his environment. Whilst studying at art school he developed an innovative steaming method which allowed him to manipulate a variety of wood types and bring his stunning designs to life. These contemporary pieces are heavily influenced by forms found in nature, and are constructed using sustainable materials and ecologically sound practices. Handmade in Cornwall, England, Tom Raffield's exquisite collection of lighting and furniture offers a remedy to the current throw-away culture, and re-introduces the concept of the cherished collectable.

Our Stylist Says

I love this light for its sculptural quality - it acts as both a statement piece and a functional ceiling light. The Skipper's organic, looped design lends itself well to modern or contemporary interiors, particularly those with natural or minimalist themes. It's ideal over dining tables, kitchen islands, or even in a spacious living room where it can be appreciated as a focal point. When styling, consider pairing it with understated furniture to let the fixture really stand out, and opt for warm or neutral tones in your decor to complement the wood finish. Its size makes it versatile for larger spaces but also works well in slightly more intimate settings where you want to add a bit of architectural interest.

About John Lewis

Founded in 1864, John Lewis is a trusted and beloved brand where you can find a diverse range of furniture for every style and budget, alongside finding the perfect item that reflects your personal taste.

A Legacy of Innovation and Inclusion

John Lewis started as a small shop on London's Oxford Street in 1864. Today, it's part of a bigger family called the John Lewis Partnership, which also includes Waitrose stores.

What makes them special is that they're owned by their employees, known as 'Partners'. The idea, from the beginning, was to give everyone a say in how the business was run. With over 74,000 Partners (employees) at the heart of its operations, the essence of John Lewis's vision, from over a century ago, still echoes today being the largest employee-owned venture.

Adapting to Changing Times

Like many stores, John Lewis has had to change with the times. They've closed some shops but have grown their online business a lot, especially when more people started shopping online during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Their history is filled with key moments, like buying Peter Jones in 1905, adding Waitrose in 1937, and starting their website in 2001. They've always tried to adapt and stay relevant.

Commitment to a Greater Purpose

John Lewis believes in doing good and making the world a better place. This is seen in the way they treat their employees and customers. For example, in 2021, they were the first big UK store to give parents six months paid leave when they have a baby and two weeks paid leave if they lose a pregnancy. They've been around for over a century and always aim to do the right thing by everyone.
