Description

Design. One of the first things Tim started selling in his dad’s antiques store was old leather suitcases and trunks. The leather on the suitcases had taken a beautiful sheen which would come from the greases and waxes that built up over time, due to constant handling. And they’d collect scratches with every journey, which would add uniqueness and character to each piece. The Timothy Oulton trunk collection takes the nostalgic travel trunk of yesteryear and transforms it into an innovative range of coffee tables and side tables for the modern home. Available in vintage-inspired leathers or contemporary finishes of steel, oxidised brass and cowhide.

Our Stylist Says

I love this trunk for its vintage appeal and sturdy construction, making it both a striking focal point and practical storage piece. It works particularly well in industrial, eclectic, or classic interiors, adding a touch of character while helping keep clutter out of sight. Practical styling tips include using it as a coffee table in living rooms or as a statement storage solution in bedrooms or hallways. You can also style it with a tray and some decorative accessories on top to transform it into a functional yet stylish surface. Its dark tones and metal details lend themselves nicely to darker colour schemes or to add contrast in lighter, more neutral spaces.

About Barker and Stonehouse

Founded in 1946, Barker and Stonehouse offer a diverse range of stylish and timeless pieces. From contemporary to traditional designs, Barker and Stonehouse brings sophistication and comfort to every room.

A Remarkable Journey

Born from the vision of two young RAF men, Charles Barker and Alex Stonehouse, Barker and Stonehouse emerged as a beacon of hope, infusing post-war Britain with a hint of glamour. Starting from a single store in Stockton on Tees, their entrepreneurial spirit led to rapid expansion, opening multiple stores across the region.

Their fast growth was fueled not only by their flair for business but also by their dedication to innovation. The business transformed over the years, adapting to the changing landscapes of retail, all while preserving its charm and values. By 2021, they marked an impressive 75 years in the industry, a testament to their enduring commitment to quality and customer service.

Sustainability at the Forefront

From the very start, Barker and Stonehouse has held a deep commitment to the environment. This devotion was showcased through initiatives such as the Trees4Trees Project, a reforestation effort in Indonesia.

Ensuring that for every tree used in their products, more than two were replanted, nearly 1.5 million trees have been restored under this initiative.

Their Knaresborough store, one of the greenest retail stores in the UK, further underscores their dedication to sustainable practices. As a cherry on top, by 2021, the company achieved the status of "Carbon Neutral Plus", making them a trailblazer in the furniture industry.

Innovative Spaces and Expanding Horizons

Over the decades, Barker and Stonehouse didn't just expand in number, but in the quality and innovation of their spaces. From opening their iconic store in Battersea, London, which beautifully preserved the characteristics of an old candle factory, to their latest state-of-the-art Gateshead store in 2023, every location tells a story.

They have also ventured into digital realms, ensuring a vast online presence and offering a wide range of products to customers all over the UK. Their partnerships, like the one with Fenwick in 2021, illustrate their adaptability and constant quest to reach new audiences.
