Price History
Description
The Axel Double Bookcase crosses old world and industrial with its combination of reclaimed boat wood from decommissioned Chinese junks and hand-treated metal detailing. The Sassafras boat wood is painstakingly reclaimed, with 400 nails remived from the timber to make just one Axel product. Each piece is different, as the finish accentuates uniquely weathered colourations and textures resulting from decades of exposure to the high seas and elements.
Our Stylist Says
I really like the Timothey Oulton Axel reclaimed wood bookcase because of its sturdy, rustic charm and versatility. It's ideal for adding warmth to both modern and industrial interiors, thanks to its natural wood finish and minimalist frame. When styling, consider combining a mix of vintage books, curated decor items, and perhaps some plants to bring life and colour. It's practical for both living rooms and home offices, providing ample storage without feeling bulky. For a cohesive look, pair it with other reclaimed or distressed furniture, and avoid overloading the shelves to maintain a balanced, clean aesthetic.

A Remarkable Journey
Born from the vision of two young RAF men, Charles Barker and Alex Stonehouse, Barker and Stonehouse emerged as a beacon of hope, infusing post-war Britain with a hint of glamour. Starting from a single store in Stockton on Tees, their entrepreneurial spirit led to rapid expansion, opening multiple stores across the region.
Their fast growth was fueled not only by their flair for business but also by their dedication to innovation. The business transformed over the years, adapting to the changing landscapes of retail, all while preserving its charm and values. By 2021, they marked an impressive 75 years in the industry, a testament to their enduring commitment to quality and customer service.
Sustainability at the Forefront
From the very start, Barker and Stonehouse has held a deep commitment to the environment. This devotion was showcased through initiatives such as the Trees4Trees Project, a reforestation effort in Indonesia.
Ensuring that for every tree used in their products, more than two were replanted, nearly 1.5 million trees have been restored under this initiative.
Their Knaresborough store, one of the greenest retail stores in the UK, further underscores their dedication to sustainable practices. As a cherry on top, by 2021, the company achieved the status of "Carbon Neutral Plus", making them a trailblazer in the furniture industry.
Innovative Spaces and Expanding Horizons
Over the decades, Barker and Stonehouse didn't just expand in number, but in the quality and innovation of their spaces. From opening their iconic store in Battersea, London, which beautifully preserved the characteristics of an old candle factory, to their latest state-of-the-art Gateshead store in 2023, every location tells a story.
They have also ventured into digital realms, ensuring a vast online presence and offering a wide range of products to customers all over the UK. Their partnerships, like the one with Fenwick in 2021, illustrate their adaptability and constant quest to reach new audiences.
