Description

Design. In the 1800s Sir John Rennie was asked to design a new bridge and in 1839, when London Bridge Station was opened, the first 'commuters' used the bridge to go over to the city. In 1968, Rennie's bridge was sold to the Mc Culloch Oil Corporation and transported to Arizona to be rebuilt at Lake Havasu City. Five years later, London Bridge was reincarnated again, and officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II.

Our Stylist Says

I love this vintage-style bridge print for its industrial charm combined with classic elegance. It works particularly well in rustic, loft, or contemporary interiors where its iron bridge motif complements raw materials like exposed brick or metal accents. When styling, consider pairing it with oak or dark wood furniture to enhance its warm tones or hang it as a focal point above a console or sofa to add visual interest. Practical tips include layering with other artwork in similar tones or adding subtle lighting to highlight the print’s details - it’s a versatile piece that can elevate both minimalist and eclectic spaces.

About Barker and Stonehouse

Founded in 1946, Barker and Stonehouse offer a diverse range of stylish and timeless pieces. From contemporary to traditional designs, Barker and Stonehouse brings sophistication and comfort to every room.

A Remarkable Journey

Born from the vision of two young RAF men, Charles Barker and Alex Stonehouse, Barker and Stonehouse emerged as a beacon of hope, infusing post-war Britain with a hint of glamour. Starting from a single store in Stockton on Tees, their entrepreneurial spirit led to rapid expansion, opening multiple stores across the region.

Their fast growth was fueled not only by their flair for business but also by their dedication to innovation. The business transformed over the years, adapting to the changing landscapes of retail, all while preserving its charm and values. By 2021, they marked an impressive 75 years in the industry, a testament to their enduring commitment to quality and customer service.

Sustainability at the Forefront

From the very start, Barker and Stonehouse has held a deep commitment to the environment. This devotion was showcased through initiatives such as the Trees4Trees Project, a reforestation effort in Indonesia.

Ensuring that for every tree used in their products, more than two were replanted, nearly 1.5 million trees have been restored under this initiative.

Their Knaresborough store, one of the greenest retail stores in the UK, further underscores their dedication to sustainable practices. As a cherry on top, by 2021, the company achieved the status of "Carbon Neutral Plus", making them a trailblazer in the furniture industry.

Innovative Spaces and Expanding Horizons

Over the decades, Barker and Stonehouse didn't just expand in number, but in the quality and innovation of their spaces. From opening their iconic store in Battersea, London, which beautifully preserved the characteristics of an old candle factory, to their latest state-of-the-art Gateshead store in 2023, every location tells a story.

They have also ventured into digital realms, ensuring a vast online presence and offering a wide range of products to customers all over the UK. Their partnerships, like the one with Fenwick in 2021, illustrate their adaptability and constant quest to reach new audiences.
