The return of an icon… After decades of being out of production, the Timberline floor lamp from Danish designer Mads Caprani is finally returning to the homes of design-lovers around the world. First created in the 1970s, the Timberline floor lamp (globally known as the "Caprani lamp") quickly became the flagship product of lighting designer Mads Caprani. This swan-neck floor lamp has playful curves that both capture the language of 1970s Scandinavian design and transcend it. With its playful expression, sinuous organic shape and its juxtaposition of materials, the Timberline floor lamp is a sculptural element that can be effortlessly slipped into any space, blending in with any style. The lamp is named after Caprani's fascination with nature. Timberline refers to the "tree limit": the limit of the habitat in which trees are able to develop, the transition point of the landscape between wood and rock. Into the Timberline floor lamp, he translated the notion of natural borders and an abrupt juxtaposition of materials between wood and cast iron. Mikkel Caprani, son of Mads Caprani: "My father's ambition was always to create a piece that had a major impact on the international design stage, and the Timberline floor lamp is the product which made it possible. For me, it's an immense honour to be able to give a new life to my father's design. It's fantastic to see my father's lamp back in production, thanks to GUBI, and to be able to share his creativity and vision with a new generation." Timberline is formed of three, distinctive elements, each in a different natural material. A lampshade consisting of pleated fabric is mounted on top of a sinuous base in wood veneer, supported and stabilised by a cast iron, crescent-shaped base. Both fanciful and elegant, Caprani's lamp embodies a certain number of juxtapositions of shapes and materials. The clean lines of the lampshade contrast with the curves of the wooden column, whilst the light and natural colour finds its answer in the black of the base. The lamp has a lightweight appearance, almost as if it could tilt or lift off at any time, but the cast iron base is perfectly weighted to ensure its stability. To create what may be the most distinctive feature of the Timberline, its sinuous stem, the GUBI team used a retro-engineering method which allowed for a precise, curved line. It's formed of several layers of oak and birch, which are visible in the profile of the lamp, raising a complex construction technique into a design element in its own right. Another signature of the design is the grooving which goes up the centre of the wooden base and which holds the cable, preserving the curved and elegant silhouette of the lamp and demonstrating Caprani's impressive understanding of the materials he selected.
I love this floor lamp for its elegant, minimalist design that brings a subtle 1970s vibe into contemporary spaces. Its natural wood finish and textile shade make it versatile enough to suit a variety of interiors, from Scandi-neutral to more eclectic schemes. I recommend pairing it with soft furnishings in warm tones or textured fabrics to highlight its natural materials. Practical styling tips include positioning it beside a reading nook or near a cosy armchair to create a welcoming, functional corner. Its slender, curving silhouette works well in open-plan living areas or as a statement piece in a minimalist bedroom, adding warmth and visual interest without overwhelming the space.
