The "The Penguin" collection was designed in 1953 by Danish designer Ib Kofod-Larsen (1921-2003). When it was launched in the United States, the chair became Kofod-Larsen's signature. A mid-century masterpiece, this is a classic that is now part of Danish cultural heritage and the history of design. The Penguin s’inspire was inspired by the American modernism of the 1950s and 1960s. Great modernity emanates from this sculptural silhouette and its curving, organic lines. The open construction is composed of a wide, embracing backrest in either oak or walnut veneer, and a seat that can be upholstered in fabric or leather. The slightly oversized shell with organic lines contrasts with the rigorous and elongated steel frame. Designer Ib Kofod-Larsen designed the Penguin Chair by focusing on the ergonomics of its concept. The wide, curved backrest and tilted seat adapt to the body's position. The remarkably simple design offers an incredible level of comfort. The Penguin Lounge Chair has a graphic purity that means it can discreetly and elegantly interact with other furniture elements. Ib Kofod-Larsen is now known to be one of the most underrated yet one of the most talented Danish designers, often working in the shadow of his better-known peers, such as Arne Jacobsen and Hans J. Wegner. His furniture is sophisticated and well-proportioned, with stunning sculptural silhouettes and curving, organic lines.
I really like this armchair because it blends playful character with modern craftsmanship. The natural wood backrest adds warmth and texture, making it versatile for both contemporary and Scandi-inspired interiors, while the padded seat brings comfort with a pop of colour that can be easily coordinated with a neutral or vibrant palette. It works particularly well in informal living spaces, reading nooks, or home offices where a touch of personality is welcome. Practical styling tips include pairing it with minimalist wooden or metal tables and adding a cosy throw or cushion in complementary colours to create a welcoming, layered look. Its clean yet distinctive silhouette makes it a stylish statement piece that doesn’t overpower the room.
