In the 17th Century an illustrator called Maria Sybilla Merian, travelled across Surinam with her daughter at the age of fifty two. This was an astonishing achievement for a woman at the time. She recorded the flora, fauna and wildlife she encountered, creating beautiful paintings that had a fantastical feel to them. The insects she documents were often seen in Europe for the first time. This collection is inspired by extraordinary female explorers and their sketchbooks. This collection evokes an artist’s palette much like the watercolours used by these women on their expeditions. The harsh environments limited what they could carry on their journeys reducing the variability of colour, which is demonstrated in the tonal hues of the design.
