Description
A timeline of design. The Chair Collection poster presents 224 chairs selected from the Vitra Design Museum's collection which contains over 7,000 pieces. The chairs are grouped chronologically according to their year of creation, from the Chaise de Garde by Jean-Joseph Chapuis designed in 1802 to Joris Laarman's 2014 creation. All creations are listed along with the original manufacturer of the first series of products. This poster reveals the important milestones in the history of design from the 1800s to present day, creating a pathway through time leading to the creation of modern seating. A magnificent collection of emblematic works is presented to you. The Wire chair DKX, the Wassily chair and the Eames lounge chair can be found in the collection. In total, no less than 124 chair models have stood out in their time. These chairs all carry the memories of their times: Materials, shapes, colours. They reveal the often forgotten dreams of their time, the (sometimes utopian) aspirations of their designers, but above all to their vision of the world. Rolf Fehlbaum, President of Vitra: “We can deduce and understand an era, its social order, its materials, its techniques and its taste by observing its chairs. I should point out that no other everyday object offers such diversity. ” This poster is not only a decorative object that makes for an original piece of decor, but is also an educational tool for all design lovers, universities, design schools and architects. Vitra has had its own museum, the Vitra Design Museum, in Weil-am-Rhein since 1989.
Our Stylist Says
I love this poster because it acts as both a playful homage to design history and a vibrant visual statement. Its colourful, detailed illustrations of various chairs make it a versatile piece that can work well in a range of interiors - from contemporary workspaces to eclectic living rooms. When styling, consider placing it where it can be the focal point, such as above a neutral sofa or in a home office, and complement it with minimal accessories to let the artwork shine. For added impact, frame it in a sleek, simple border to enhance its colours and details without competing with surrounding decor. This piece is not just a reference tool but a dynamic piece of art that injects personality and wit into any space.
