The designers from the Pool studio introduce marquetry into the world of contemporary design. Precious and refined, their Tavla extending table interprets the traditional technique of marquetry in a very contemporary way. Two colours of walnut wood are used (natural and black) to create a contrasting geometric pattern with a strong character. This ultra-graphic decoration presents a symmetrical collage of large geometric shapes. The repetitive, dynamic pattern plays with the effects of breaks and continuity. The contrasting patterns are reinforced by the grain of the wood, oriented in both directions. Tavla's inspiration comes from the personal story of designer Léa Padovani, who is partly Iranian, and admired the work on backgammon tables (Tavla being the Iranian word for backgammon). The Tavla table is the result of the search for a balance between graphics, materials and a passion for craftsmanship. POOL is a dual composition by Léa Padovani (1981), a French designer of Iranian and Italian origin, and Sébastien Kieffer (1982), who’s French, based in Paris. Beyond the obviousness of the object, its beauty or function, they seek the polysemy of their works and challenge their affectivity and their referent.
I love this Tavla Extending table for its sleek, functional design and the way it balances versatility with craftsmanship. Its walnut inlay adds warmth and a touch of sophistication, making it a great statement piece in both contemporary and mid-century inspired interiors. It’s ideal for open-plan spaces or dining rooms where flexibility is key, thanks to the extendable feature that accommodates guests comfortably. When styling, consider pairing it with minimalist chairs in natural or contrasting materials to highlight the walnut detail, and keep accessories minimal to let the table's craftsmanship shine. It works particularly well in rooms with neutral palettes or natural textures, creating a welcoming yet refined dining environment.
