To make the Smatrik stool, Japanese designer Tokujin Yoshioka put his creativity as well as his sense of experimentation to good use with Kartell. This stool is an intense mix of design and technology. Made of polycarbonate, the double-walled openwork seat looks like lace: an extremely refined effect offering surprising visual lightness. This seat is made using an innovative injection moulding technology that provides a 3D effect. The structure obtained takes the form of a three-dimensional lattice: the two layers of polycarbonate, superimposed and crossed, give rise to a seat with an ethereal volume. The multiple openings provide a graphic, delicate pattern that plays with transparency, light and shadow. The varying hole sizes give the impression of movement. The base consists of a steel wire structure, fine and delicate. A long study and design process allowed such a product, so prodigious in plastic material, to be made on an industrial scale for the first time. Smatrik has unique features in terms of strength, durability and flexibility defined by its exclusive production technology. The Italian brand says: "The mix of creative design and technological research is part of Kartell's DNA. New materials constantly pose new challenges which the company has taken on for many years with large investments in order to keep surpassing new limits".
