I’m a fan of this black upholstered shoe bench because it combines seating and storage without looking bulky. The slim metal frame and simple lines suit contemporary, industrial or Scandinavian-inspired hallways, while the faux-leather top wipes clean and feels comfortable when you’re putting on shoes.
To style it, tuck a couple of woven baskets on the lower shelves for gloves and scarves, then mount a slim mirror or wall hooks above to create a practical drop zone. In a smaller hallway, position it beneath a floating shelf and add a slim cushion or two in contrast colours to soften the look.

In 1980, Chris Dawson set up a simple open-air market stall in Plymouth.
