At a time when more and more people were starting to work from home for all or part of the day, the Italian designer Vico Magistretti developed the aluminium and polypropylene Silver series of chairs for De Padova. As his inspiration Magistretti took a 1920s chair designed by Marcel Breuer and manufactured by Thonet in Austria. Originally an architecture student, Magistretti turned to product and furniture design in the late 1940s during Italy's post-war drive of reconstruzione. Typically he took an existing object as his starting point and then rethought it by assessing whether it could be improved with the use of modern materials and production processes.
I love how the Silver Chair by De Padova adds a sleek, contemporary touch to dining interiors. Its minimalist design and contrast of black and white make it versatile enough to work in both modern and industrial spaces, particularly when paired with neutral palettes or bold accent colours. Practical styling tips include mixing it with softer textiles like velvet or linen cushions for added comfort, or placing it alongside a natural wood table to create a striking visual contrast. Its open, woven back offers breathability, making it ideal for longer dinners, while the straightforward silhouette ensures it doesn't overpower a room, making it a reliable choice for both everyday dining and more styled table settings.
