The design of Silex vases required Belgian designer Sylvain Willenz to carry out a lot of research work on shapes. Viewed from above, the vases are neither actual cylinders nor squares. The faceted angles contrast deftly with the rounded glass. "A shape that’s difficult to produce", comments Sylvain Willenz. The Silex vase is indeed the result of an exceptional piece of work in hand-blown glass. "Managing to blow enough glass against these faceted angles requires a lot of lung capacity. It’s a problem we don’t necessarily encounter with round forms. " Another big challenge is that the weight of Silex vases requires a lot of force from the glass blowers. Experienced and specialised, they can then produce vases in the proper form. The two colours (amber and smoked blue) complement each other perfectly. The refracted light gives each vase a different appearance depending on the angle of vision.
I love this Silex medium vase for its minimalist yet bold silhouette; the slightly rounded edges and rich blue hue make it a versatile piece that can add colour without overwhelming a space. It works particularly well in modern or contemporary interiors, but can also bring an unexpected pop of colour to more neutral, Scandi-inspired schemes. For styling, I’d suggest grouping it with smaller vases in complementary tones or mixing with natural elements like dried grasses or single stems for a simple, refined arrangement. It’s also a great option for both standalone displays or paired with other decor items on a sideboard or shelf, and because of its height, it lends itself to striking larger blooms or tall greenery to create visual interest.
