The first cantilever chair design in furniture history, the S 34 Chair with armrests in an Iroko wood and black powder-coated finish by Mart Stam has earnt its place in the design hall of fame. Originally designed in 1926 for the Weissenhof-Siedlung housing estate in Stuttgart, the S33 Chair was inspired by gas pipes and is today crafted by esteemed manufacturer Thonet. Connecting the piping with flanges, Mart Stam developed the principle of cantilevering chairs that no longer rest on four legs. Interestingly, at the time, Stam was not that interested in the flexing effect of bent tubular steel, a technique that would soon become instrumental in the Bauhaus school of design. Finishing the statement black powder-coated tubular steel frame with a soft, breathable mesh fabric and stained Iroko wood armrests, the S 34 Chair is sure to lend a touch of modern design to any space.
