Description

Originally designed by Marcel Breuer in 1935 and now crafted by Thonet, the S 285 Writing Desk in a black finish would lend a touch of mid-century design to any home office or workspace. Showcasing a stained black beech surface as well as drawers on either side of the desk in the same black hue, the desk is supported by a striking black tubular steel frame. Consisting of a singular curved line, the frame demonstrates perfectly the innovation of the Bauhaus and its designers. One of the Bauhaus' first students, Hungarian-born Marcel Breuer is widely considered one of the most popular and influential architects and furniture designers of the 20th century. Studying alongside and under design icons and artists such as Wassily Kandinsky, Walter Gropius, Paul Klee and Josef Albers, Breuer went on to become a figurehead of the modernist movement.

Our Stylist Says

I love this piece for its sleek, contemporary look that combines black accents with a minimalistic frame, making it versatile across various interior styles. It works particularly well in modern, industrial, or even transitional spaces where clean lines and a functional aesthetic are key. For styling tips, consider pairing it with light-coloured or textured accessories to add contrast and soften the overall look. Don't forget to position it in a well-lit spot to highlight its design details, and keep the surface clutter-free for a tidy, polished workspace. It’s a practical yet stylish choice for those seeking a statement desk that offers both form and function.
