The “Rio R50” collection is a tribute to the Rio armchair, one of the historic models by Emu, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. The Rio armchair was produced between 1960 and 1970. The retro grace of this mesh metal collection is brought up to date by the use of modern materials and manufacturing techniques. The ethereal silhouette of this low armchair represents a minimal, refined graphic sign. The metal mesh makes the volume of the chair intangible. With its simple, essential lines, Rio 50 finds its place in different environments, from the house to the garden. With more than fifty years’ experience in metalworking, Emu expresses its style in gardens and on terraces all around the world. Emu creations have become icons in the world of "made in Italy" design and quality. The Rio 50 low armchair consists of an ASFORM steel tube structure, high-quality steel with advanced mechanical capacities and high weight-resistance. The steel tube is characterised by a clearly visible "R" in the area where the seat joins the backrest. All its structural welds are carried out using Ming technology, which provides better resistance to stresses and reduces the risk of rust while, for greater precision, the steel wire mesh is electro-welded to the structure. As with all EMU steel products, a cataphoresis pre-treatment is applied, followed by the application of a thermosetting powder paint. So the product is covered with a layer of paint of uniform thickness, offering a high degree of adhesion and resistance. The presence of nylon caps at the end of the feet helps protect the product and make it easier to move around.
I love the Rio R50 stackable low armchair for its sleek, minimalist design and versatility. Its metal frame and grid pattern give it a contemporary edge that pairs well with modern or industrial outdoor schemes, but it also works equally well in relaxed boho patios or even as a statement piece in a sunroom. Practical styling tips include stacking them when not in use to save space, or mixing them with cushions and throws in textured fabrics for a softer look. Because of its open design, it’s great for creating an airy, unfussy vibe, making it a smart choice for both casual garden gatherings and stylish outdoor lounges.
