Description

Treat yourself to an ORIGINAL iconic piece by Cappellini. An original will never lose its value. It will stay with you for your whole life, and even longer, perfect for passing on to the next generation. A key figure in post-modern Japanese design, Shiro Kuramata (1934 - 1991) has made a huge impact on 20th-Century design with his extraordinary pieces. A lover of poetic minimalism, the designer is known for having constantly tried throughout his career to shake off the shackles of gravity: Nobody before him has pushed the limits of materiality so far. Shiro Kuramata's style is imbued with humour and poetry, combined in the quest of a lightweight and minimalist style. His work on light, transparency and immateriality, as well as his bold and eccentric choices of material, have made a precursor out of Kuramata. In 1968, Shiro Kuramata designed Pyramid Furniture: a piece made entirely out of acrylic with countless drawers, embodying the concept of getting lost and found. This is a nod to the stacked sculptures of American artist Donald Judd (1928 - 1994). Wheel-mounted, this shortened pyramid-shaped stack of drawers is a play on tensions and balance. Pyramid combines elegance and Japanese simplicity with modern materials and cutting-edge techniques. The sculptural geometric shape of this piece conceals its function. Shiro Kuramata continually seeks to reroute the eye to spark out curiosity and solicit each and every sense. The pyramid-shaped transparent acrylic resin structure contains 17 drawers of different sizes, made from black acrylic resin. Always one step ahead of the technologies and materials available, Kuramata has a particular soft spot for using transparent materials, such as glass and acrylic, to create designs that are uniquely lightweight. Shiro Kuramata's creations are now exhibited in the most prestigious museums around the world, such as the MoMA in New York, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, the Vitra Design Museum in Basel, and the National Museum of Modern Art in Kyoto. Shiro Kuramata's production method essentially consists of limited and rare series which achieve incredibly high prices at auction.

Our Stylist Says

I love this piece for its bold, sculptural form and its retro-futuristic vibe, which makes it a statement addition in both modern and eclectic interiors. The pyramid shape adds visual interest and works well in minimalist or contemporary spaces, especially when paired with sleek materials and clean lines. It’s quite versatile too-you can style its surface with a few curated accessories or keep it clear for a more streamlined look. Practical tips include placing it against a wall to enhance its architectural presence, and using it in a space where its height and geometric shape can be properly appreciated without overwhelming the room. It’s both a functional chest of drawers and a striking design piece, perfect for adding character to a living room or open-plan space.
